What fabrics can irritate our skin?

The skin is the largest organ in the body and forms a protective barrier between the external environment and the internal organs. However, in urban areas with rising environmental pollution, extensive use of strong chemical dyes and synthetic fabrics our skin is growing more sensitive each day with allergies on the rise.

Polyester, a synthetic fabric made from petroleum-based products, has become so popular in recent years, because it’s inexpensive, lightweight and easy to care for.  However, there are also several risks associated with wearing polyester clothing, that should be understood.

  1. Skin irritation: Polyester is not a breathable fabric, and it can trap moisture and sweat against your skin. This can lead to skin irritation, especially in sensitive areas such as the underarms and groin.

  2. Overheating: As mentioned, polyester is not a breathable fabric, so it can trap heat against your skin. This can lead to overheating, especially in hot and humid weather conditions.

  3. Environmental impact: Polyester is not biodegradable, which means it can take hundreds of years to break down in a landfill. It is also not easy to recycle, so it often ends up in landfills and contributes to the growing problem of textile waste.

  4. Static electricity: Polyester is prone to static electricity, which can be uncomfortable and frustrating, especially during the winter months when humidity is low.

  5. Fire hazard: Polyester is highly flammable and can quickly catch fire, making it a fire hazard.

  6. Chemical sensitivity: Some people are sensitive to the chemicals used in the production of polyester, which can cause allergic reactions such as rashes, hives, and itching.

Polyester - cheaper, quicker and easier to obtain than most natural fabrics, it’s not surprising that fast fashion fell in love with it. But at what COST?

Shop wisely and be aware of the potential risks and the huge environmental impact of polyester.

Choose natural and breathable fabrics, like organic cotton & linen that are kind to your skin and good for the health of the entire family & our planet.
